Pregnancy Aid of Snohomish County exists solely to help mothers and their babies, through their pregnancy and afterward. The majority of our clients are low-income and often in their teens, although in recent years our clientele has included more women in their 30s and 40s, even grandmothers in their 50s and 60s who are caring for their grandbabies.
Many of our services revolve around friendly consultative support, referrals to other specialized services in the county and baby layettes, maternity clothing and baby clothing, all provided at no cost, as well as emergency supplies of diapers, baby food, formula and even car seats for needy families for their children’s safety, when supplies are available.
In 1970, three years before the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision made abortions legal nationally, Washington State became the first state to legalize abortion by a vote of the people.
Less than a year later, Pregnancy Aid of Snohomish County was founded in Everett, Wash., by five men and women who recognized that many expectant mothers lacked the personal support and material assistance necessary to encourage them to see their pregnancies to term.
For the past 40 years the volunteer staff and financial supporters of Pregnancy Aid have served low-income women who are in great need of both practical assistance and emotional support during and after their pregnancy.
Since our office opened in 1971, Pregnancy Aid has served more than 100,000 low-income expectant mothers and their babies, as well as mothers with young children. Each year we provide mothers in need with maternity and baby clothing at no cost, along with emergency supplies of diapers, baby formula and essential safety-related car seats whenever supplies are available or donations allow us to purchase these items.
When we started, we were the first independent non-profit community service agency in Snohomish County to provide these services for expectant women and their babies. Today, there are seven other offices founded by Pregnancy Aid (in Auburn, Kent, Olympia, South King County, Tacoma, Thurston County and Whidbey Island), each of them funded and operated independently but all united by adhering to the original principals and goals of Pregnancy Aid of Snohomish County.
We receive donations of clothing from stores, churches, individuals and “baby shower” events by various groups each year. We depend on financial contributions from such groups as the Knights of Columbus councils in Everett and Marysville, St. Mary’s Women’s Group in Marysville, Ramo Realty in Arlington, Dwayne Lane Auto Dealerships and Wild Birds Unlimited in Monroe. Over the years we've also received grants from the Boeing Co., the City of Everett Block Grants program and private foundations.
But we are most dependent on regular contributions from people like yourself who support us so we can meet the needs of mothers and their children. Please donate to us by mail (P.O. Box 1317, Everett, WA 98206) or through our Web site's donation options. Our staff and the mothers and families we serve will thank you.
Our clients are from all over the county and from a wide range of races, ethnicities and ages. We have existed and grown primarily through the support of volunteers, financial donors and fund-raising activities. In recent years, our annual auctions have provided a significant amount of our revenues, along with individual contributions throughout the year. Our next auction is set for Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at St. Mary's Parish Hall in Marysville.
